Negative people are all around us and it can be hard to avoid and not letting these negative vibes affect us. You can't always control your situation or environment such as work places or other planned events but what you can control are your thoughts and reactions to things.
The key is to think a little deeper and put yourself in that persons shoes for a moment.
Two questions you could ask yourself is:
- What is going on in this persons life right now?
It´s so easy to judge someone straight away without even trying to understand.
- Does this make me feel better?
Most of the time the answere on that question is no. So give it a second thought and decide if you wan't that tiny little moment affect your mood in a negative way.
When we react negative on these type of situations it's most of the time because something is going on inside of ourselves. Our morning could have started with stress, maybe someone rejected us in some way and that hurt our feelings or there could be something bigger going on in our lives that are affecting us in a negative way long term. The key is to understand yourself and ask yourself why you are reacting in certain ways to be able to change it.
The next step is to think of how you could help that person to change attitude to a more positive one.
Questions you could ask are:
- Do you need something?
- Do you wan't me to help you?
- How are you?
Just by asking someone the last question can help that person break from the negative behaviour and feel seen and heard. That may be all that's needed, just by a simple question.
There will be situations too where nothing you do can help the other person, they have just decided they wan't to have a bad day and complain about everything. In this case the best thing to do is to walk away. If you are stuck in a workplace and can't walk away, try to talk to someone else about it and if that doesn't help, work on your mindset. Try to be understanding, put yourself in that persons shoes for a second because most likely it's not going to last forever. Then the most important of all, do not take that negative behaviour from someone else personal. If you know you haven't done anything wrong, there are nothing you should apologise for. That is all about their problems and inner conflicts which you can't do anything about.
Remember how you felt when you woke up today. Did you already have negative thoughts or did you let this person bring them onto you? If they did, shake them of. It is their negative thoughts and not yours.
I think we need more people in the world who understand themselves and others way more than we do today. So how is this possible then? You have to start, be the example for everyone else. Step up, show up & spread your positivity & energy.
