6 reasons why I do vanlife

I get the question all the time why I choose to live in a car instead of a house or apartment. And fair enough, it’s not the most normal thing to do even if vanlife is a pretty big thing nowadays around the world.

So, why have I chose to do this then? Here are my biggest reasons:
1. The simple lifestyle that comes with it.
I’m a big fan of minimalism which has it’s purpose in owning only the most essential things, the things you actually need. I found it more satisfying to live that way and you can’t really have too much stuff when you live in such a small place.
2. All the exploring & adventures I get to experience.
This is what I love doing! Explore new places where I haven’t been before and I automatically do that all the time since I’m always on the road. I have even discovered new places in my home town that I have never seen before just by being more outside. Sometimes you are forced to drive around for a bit to find a good place to sleep. This allows you to find somewhere new, good or bad. One place could be perfect one night but the next, it’s the worst. 😉
3. Getting closer to nature
Since you basically live outside, you spend heaps of time in nature. We all know there are good health benefits of spending time in nature so of course this is one of my favourite reasons. You get to choose your morning, day and evening view exactly how you want it. Can that be better?!

4. The feeling of freedom
I get this feeling so much more while living like this instead of in a house or apartment. You are always on the go, which can be exhausting at times but if you spend most time around the same area for a longer time, you find a few good spots you can go and come back too. You always have your stuff with you, you never have to pack, it’s easy to clean and you can go whenever you want without any big plans. Simple!
5. Able to save more money
Because you don’t pay rent for a home, you can save that money for other important things. Of course you may need to spend a little extra on your car/van since you will be living in it. I recently got a few things installed in mine such as a diesel heater, solar panel, fan etc. and the next project is walls, roof and furniture. At first, you may spend a bit more money on your car but when all those things are done and ready, you will be able to save a lot more. Remember, a money savings buffert for your van is always neccessary to have. We know cars, usually it’s always something that needs to be fixed, big or small, even if it (hopefully) doesn’t happen every month like paying rent. This is the same as your house savings but for your van instead.
6. Connecting with new people
The last couple of weeks I have met a guy from England and a girl from Switzerland traveling around in their vans. This was in the area around my home town! I’m pretty sure this would never have happened if I wasn’t living the way I do. I found it super interesting to hear their stories of what they do, where they have been and where they are going next. There are so much to learn from others and their experiences and you get to share your own with them as well.

Does this seem like something you want to try? Don’t hesitate to send me a message if you want to know more about my lifestyle and let’s do it together!
